I’m Already in My 50s — Can I Still Do Colour Analysis?

Short answer: YES. Absolutely.

It’s one of the questions we hear most often at House of Colour Analysis, especially from women who have gone grey, noticed changes in their contrast, or simply feel that the colours they used to wear no longer seem to work in quite the same way.

And that question makes complete sense.

But here’s the important part: your season does not change simply because you get older.

Your undertone remains the same. What can change over time is the way your colouring presents itself, particularly your level of contrast as your hair greys or your features soften. That may influence which colours in your existing palette feel especially flattering, but it doesn't mean you suddenly become a completely different season.

Your Season Doesn't Expire

Colour analysis is not tied to age.

Your natural undertone is part of your colouring, and that underlying quality does not disappear at 50, 60 or 70. A woman who was an Autumn decades ago does not suddenly stop being an Autumn because her hair has gone grey. A Winter does not lose her ability to wear clear, saturated colour simply because her skin has matured.

This is something I actually questioned myself when I first learned that our palette does not change.

I remember thinking: How? How can someone still be high chroma or highly saturated as their skin gets older?

But the more I worked with colour, and the more clients I saw, the more obvious it became.

I regularly see women over 50 who are still unmistakably Winters — clear, saturated colour brings them to life. I also work with women who were Autumns many years ago and are still beautifully Autumn today.

The season remains. What can shift is the way we use the palette.

What Can Change As We Age

Although your undertone and season remain consistent, your contrast can change.

Grey or silver hair is one of the most obvious examples. If you once had dark hair and now have soft silver or white hair, the relationship between your hair, skin, and eyes may look different than it did years ago.

That can affect which colours within your palette feel strongest.

You may find yourself gravitating towards slightly lighter shades, softer combinations, or different levels of contrast within the colours you already know suit you. Or you may discover that the vivid colours you have always loved still work beautifully.

There is no automatic rule that says ageing means you need to become softer or more muted.

That is exactly why looking at the individual matters.

Going Grey Doesn't Mean Starting Over

For many women, going grey is the moment that makes them question their entire wardrobe.

Suddenly, colours they have relied on for years can feel different next to their new hair, and it is easy to assume that their whole colour season must have changed.

It hasn’t.

Grey hair can change your visual contrast, but it does not change your undertone.

Instead of starting over, think of it as learning how to work with your palette in a new way.

You may find that some shades within your season now feel especially harmonious, while others need to be styled differently. Jewellery, makeup, contrast levels and colour combinations can all help bring your natural colouring back into balance.

And for many of our clients, that knowledge is incredibly reassuring.

This Is Something We See Every Week

A lot of women come to us after going grey because they feel a little lost with their colours.

Their old wardrobe doesn't seem to feel quite right, and they start wondering which shades will complement their hair and complexion now.

I love being able to help them explore their colouring and discover combinations that feel beautiful and comfortable to wear.

Sometimes, they simply need a little guidance on how to use their existing palette with their current hair colour and contrast.

We also meet women who had their colour analysis done many years ago but never felt completely comfortable with the season they were given.

Perhaps they've spent years trying to make certain shades work, yet something has always felt a little off.

In some cases, they may have been placed in the wrong season during their original analysis.

If you've never felt quite right in your palette, it's absolutely worth booking another colour analysis to confirm your season.

Having that reassurance can make such a difference, especially when you're ready to refre

Why Colour Analysis Can Feel Even More Valuable in Your 50s

By the time many women reach their 50s, they already know a lot about what they like.

They may have a clearer sense of personal style, stronger preferences, and far less interest in buying things simply because they're trending.

And I think that's wonderful.

Colour analysis can help bring everything together by giving you a better understanding of the shades that complement your natural colouring.

Shopping becomes more intentional because you know which colours to look for. You can explore new pieces with greater confidence and find fresh ways to combine items you already own.

It's also particularly helpful if you're embracing grey hair, updating your makeup or simply feeling ready for a wardrobe refresh.

Even small changes, like choosing a different lipstick shade or pairing two colours from your palette, can make getting dressed feel more enjoyable.

Feeling Confident in Your Colours at Any Age

One of the loveliest things about colour analysis is seeing how much confidence the right colours can bring.

When you understand which shades complement your natural colouring, getting dressed becomes easier.

You start noticing how certain colours brighten your complexion, bring out your eyes, and work beautifully with your hair, whether it's still its natural shade or has turned silver.

And that confidence can be especially meaningful as we get older.

There's something wonderful about feeling comfortable in your own style and knowing which colours make you look and feel your best.

I've seen how much joy it brings women when they discover a colour they hadn't considered before or reconnect with a shade they've loved for years.

It's one of my favourite parts of being a colour analyst.

Your Colours Are Waiting, Whenever You're Ready

If you've been wondering whether you're too old for colour analysis, whether going grey has changed your season or whether your old palette still applies, I hope this has offered a little reassurance.

Your colour season remains the same as you age, even though your contrast may change over time.

Understanding those changes can help you make the most of your palette and discover colour combinations that feel right for you today.

And if you had your colours analysed years ago but have never felt quite comfortable with the results, it may be worth having another session to confirm your season.

Whether you're exploring colour analysis for the first time or revisiting a palette you received years ago, we'd love to help you feel more confident in the colours you wear.
